Easy DIY Airheads Candy Costume For Kids (No Sew)

Easy DIY Airheads Candy Costume For Kids (No Sew)

This year my daughter went as a watermelon Airhead, and this DIY Airheads costume turned out so cute. It is bright, it is fun, and it is a little different from the usual costumes you see out trick or treating. The best part is that it is completely no sew. It is just a neon green sweatsuit, felt, and hot glue.

If your kid loves candy costumes, this one is bright, recognizable, comfortable enough to wear all night, and so easy to make.

An Easy DIY Candy Costume For Kids

Store bought candy costumes are usually stiff, scratchy, or awkward to walk in. This one is built on a regular sweatsuit, so it is warm, soft, and moves like normal clothes. That matters on a cold Halloween night, and it means your kid can actually run from house to house without a costume falling apart. And once Halloween is over, the felt pieces are the only thing that makes it a costume.

It is also instantly recognizable. The bright green, the big red logo, and the bold white letters read as Airheads from across the street.

DIY Airheads Costume Supplies

  • Neon green hoodie and sweatpants set (Amazon)

  • Red felt

  • White felt

  • Black or navy felt for the letter outlines

  • Green felt for the watermelon rind and label details

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • Fabric marker or puffy paint for small details, optional

  • Scissors and a printed template of the letters, optional

How To Make A DIY Airheads Costume

Step One, Make The Red Logo For The Hoodie

Cut a large red felt circle for the front of the hoodie. Cut a slightly larger white felt circle and glue the red circle on top so a white border shows around the edge. Add the smiley face details in white felt and glue the whole piece to the front of the hoodie.

Step Two, Make The Airheads Letters

Cut out the AIRHEADS letters in white felt in a big, bubbly style. Then cut slightly larger versions of each letter in black or navy felt and glue the white letters on top to create an outline. Glue the letters down the front of one leg of the sweatpants, starting just under the red logo so it looks like one continuous candy wrapper. Printing a letter template and tracing it onto the felt makes this step much easier.

Step Three, Add The Watermelon And Label Details

Cut a small watermelon slice from red and green felt, add little seed details, and glue it near the bottom of the letters. On the other leg, add the candy and watermelon flavor text and a small calorie badge to look like the real wrapper. These little details are what make it look like an actual Airheads bar instead of just a green outfit.

Step Four, Let It Set And Wear It

Give the hot glue a little time to cool and set before your kid puts it on. Then pull on the hoodie and sweatpants, flip the hood up, and you are done.

Tips For Making A No Sew Felt Costume

Lay out every felt piece on the sweatsuit before you glue anything, so you can see the full design and adjust spacing. Use a thin line of hot glue around the edges of each piece rather than big blobs, so the felt lies flat and stays flexible. Keep the glue gun with the adults, and let kids help pick colors, cut simple shapes, or position the pieces instead. And put a piece of cardboard inside the hoodie and pants while gluing so the glue does not seep through to the other side.

Make It A Sibling Or Group Halloween Costume

This costume is so easy to turn into a sibling or group costume. Airheads come in lots of flavors, so each kid can be a different one using the exact same steps. Just swap the sweatsuit color and the fruit detail. Blue raspberry on a blue sweatsuit, cherry on red, green apple on green, orange on orange, and grape on purple. Line them all up and you have the cutest candy group costume on the block.

It works for cousins, friend groups, and classroom parties too, and since everything is felt and hot glue, you can make several in one afternoon.

A Matching Mommy And Me Candy Costume

To match my daughter's candy theme, I went as a gumball machine, complete with a clear helmet full of pom pom gumballs and a candy door full of chocolates. It is also no sew, and you can see exactly how I made it in my DIY gumball machine costume post.
